This topic is presented as a direct response to the theme urbanism, health and well-being. Specifically, it seeks to respond to questions raised regarding the role that increasing urbanisation have in enacting the relationships and situations that are central to improved health indices and generally improved well being in a developing country.
Despite strong evidence of links between urban residency and improved maternal health, this presentation uses case studies from two neighbourhoods in a Nigerian city to highlights the health disparities in cities. It seeks to answer the relevant but often ignored questions including
a. How much should geography account for health?
b. Why should (shouldn’t) all urban residents have the urban advantage?
Using findings from ongoing research on the linkages between Urbanisation, physical infrastructure and health, together with findings from the research project that examined Well Being and Citizenship in urban Nigeria and the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, it highlights intra city disparities in relational, subjective and material well being and argues for an all inclusive urban environment that ensure improved health and well being regardless of geographical location.
