Natalia Smith-Cortinez is a Chilean PhD student in the University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, The Netherlands. She performed her bachelor and master studies in biochemistry in University of Chile and finished them in 2015. In 2016 she started her PhD project under the tuition of Dr. Klaas Nico Faber and Dr. Han Moshage. She is currently working on Hepatic Stellate Cells metabolism and its relation to liver fibrosis progression to find a specific metabolic target to treat liver fibrosis. She is also starting to work with liver organoids as part of her PhD project.

Abstract

Background: Upon liver injury, Hepatic Stellate Cells (HSC) transdifferentiate to migratory and proliferative myofibroblasts that produce excessive extracellular matrix proteins causing liver fibrosis. HSC activation... [ view full abstract ]
