Aim: This study aimed to explore patients’ perceptions regarding the impact that lower limb chronic oedema had on their quality of life.
Methods: A quantitative descriptive design was used to collect data from patients who had chronic oedema of the lower limb(s). 122 condition-specific questionnaires (LYMQOL) were distributed to patients attending various Manual Lymphatic Drainage clinics (n=21), a vascular clinic and to various public health centres (n=14) peripheral to the identified teaching hospital.
Results: Lower limb chronic oedema has significant psychological, social and physical negative implications on the quality of life of patients. Evidence of psychological distress and poor bodily image as a result of the physical change in the shape and size of the limb(s) was reported by a significant percentage (76%) of participants. The physical effects of the chronic condition were strongly identified with patients reporting symptoms of heaviness, pain, numbness, weakness and pins and needles. Additionally, difficulties with physical functioning including walking and standing and issues with sleeping were reported by participants. Limitations with social functioning and day to day living were identified as well as issues concerning the difficulty dealing with the demands of managing employment.
Conclusion: Knowledge, awareness and the development of adequate services in Ireland is crucial to adequately care for patients with lower limb chronic oedema and positively impact their quality of life. This study adds to the nursing body of knowledge by identifying the challenges endured by patients with lower limb chronic oedema and highlighting the need for the reappraisal of services in relation to this specific client group.
