CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND
Research involves the attempt to expand nursing knowledge based on scientific knowledge. Research has to be a tool for all professional to develop better care in clinical practice and to develop the profession.
Health research is nowadays an essential activity for both professionals and the organizations in which they work, and therefore also for society in general.
There is evidence of inadequate dissemination of relevant results and its poor implementation in practice which results in that care is not the most optimal.
AIM OF THE STUDY:
Identify and describe the characteristics of nurses Osakidetza-Basque Health Service in relation to the use of research.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:
Cross-sectional observational study by questionnaire. The variables studied were: sociodemographic, related to training, research and use of results in practice. Population studied were nurses of Osakidetza- Basque Health Service (7123 nurses). Descriptive statistics were used to summarize and organize the data. IBM SPSS Statistics Program is used in the version 21.00 for Windows.
KEY FINDINGS:
750 questionnaires (response rate of 40.41 %) were collected. 37.5 % of professionals reported that had received specific training in research. 69.3 % reported that they never or 1 or 2 times a year used databases, 73.7 % never or 1 or 2 times a year had used the resources of the library and 42.3 % indicated that they never or 1 or 2 times a year had read scientific journals.
CONCLUSIONS:
Nurses need to use in their day to day research results to offer the best care. Knowing aspects in relation to research utilization in Osakidetza can help to developing strategies to promoting clinical practice based of evidence and therefore ensuring the safety and quality of care provided to citizens.
