Aims
Following an award from the Martha McMenamin Memorial Scholarship the development of a sensory awareness training app Multi-media package for use by health professionals.
Objectives
• To introduce sensory awareness training for first year undergraduate nursing students in preparation for clinical practice.
• To develop a teaching tool on sensory awareness that is up to date, current and easily accessible to all health professionals.
• To provide health professionals with the information and skills necessary to engage with patients/clients with a sensory deficit.
• To evaluate the year one students satisfaction with this novel teaching tool.
By making a multi-media package that is accessible and easy to use it is hoped that:
• Nurses will have a greater understanding of sensory awareness should be able to provide patient centred care that is considerate to the individual’s needs.
• By providing nurses with an easy to use aid memoire this should improve communication and increase blind and deaf patients’ satisfaction with the service.
• The importance of sensory awareness will be highlighted within healthcare professions.
It is anticipated that the end result is that this multi-media package could be:
• Made available to all undergraduate nursing students in the UK.
• Adapted to suit other healthcare professionals and students.
• Used as a prototype for the development of other healthcare related subjects.
