Mike Carey is Head of Ergonomics at Network Rail. He leads a team of ergonomists and psychologists that input to a wide range of aspects of operations including equipment design, project assurance, incident investigations, process development and research into public behaviour.His specific interests focus upon control system and control centre design, having carried out research and design in contexts as diverse as the nuclear industry, offshore oil & gas, air traffic control and rail transportation systems. The topic of alarms was the subject of one of his first areas of study over 30 years ago and has remained a constant theme throughout his career to date.
