Groundwork
RESTRAIL was a three-year research project which ended in September 2014. Co-funded under the European Commission’s 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, it was co-ordinated by the security division of the International Union of Railways (UIC). The project aimed to help railway stakeholders reduce the number of suicides and trespassing accidents and the costly service disruption caused by these events. RESTRAIL provided the rail industry and the scientific community with a free online tool (www.restrail.eu/toolbox) comprising an extensive list of validated cost-effective interventions, recommendations, guidance materials and study results.
Goal
Organizing workshops to disseminate the toolbox and train experts to use the tool on a current basis is the key follow-up strategy since the end of the project. The aim of this workshop is to provide a practical demonstration of the RESTRAIL toolbox and to collect feedback from the attendees.
Description
The workshop will take 90 minutes and consist of four parts.
1. Short introduction (10 min): The workshop moderator will present the general organization of the workshop, the purpose of the exercise, and will give a brief overview of the RESTRAIL project.
2. Toolbox demonstration (30 min): The moderator will present the RESTRAIL toolbox and show to the participants how to use the online version of the tool.
3. Application of the toolbox on a case study (30 min): The participants will then use the toolbox and apply it on a case study based on a suicide/trespass problem. They will work in pairs or small groups (up to 4 persons) and use the toolbox in order to perform a systematic analysis of the problem and to find an appropriate solution.
4. Toolbox evaluation and final debriefing (20 min): The participants will provide feedback by filling in a short questionnaire. A short conclusive discussion will summarize the further possibilities of improvement.
Target audience
There will be at least two participants from the RESTRAIL members who will moderate the workshop. Most attendees are expected to be non-RESTRAIL members. The ideal audience would be composed of participants with any of the following field of expertise: ergonomics / human factors / safety backgrounds, specialising in research or consultancy, or the application of ergonomics / human factors within industry.
Other details
This workshop is complementary to the RESTRAIL paper submitted to RHF Conference 2015: “Behavioural interventions to prevent trespass and vandalism: Lessons learned from the RESTRAIL and GRAFFOLUTION research projects”.
The workshop brings notable added value through its orientation on the end-users and exploitation of practical aspects.
A conference room with good WI-FI connection will be needed. If possible, participants should bring an individual notebook or tablet in order to access the online version of the toolbox.
