Design and implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on the European railway network is now in progress. The implementation introduces significant changes in several parts of the socio-technical system and presents major challenges related to human integration and adequate human factors solutions throughout the signalling system life cycle. The aim of this paper is to present the concept of driveability as a tool to evaluate the implementation of ERTMS and to emphasize on the need for end user involvement in the design, verification and validation process. The paper will describe results from its application on ERTMS in Sweden and will also presented tools for user centred design.
