Introduction: In this oral poster presentation the director and cast members of Scottish Autism's theatre production, "The Tree and the Abbey", reflect upon their experiences of developing a mixed media performance that recognised and enabled the voices of all cast members.

Main points: Using the concept of ‘voice’ to encompass a broad range of expressive communication – from spoken theatrical roles to movement, dance, percussion and visual art – we document the rehearsal workshop processes through which each cast member’s individual strengths, interests and means of expression were built upon to create a social history of Fife. The production included drama, song, puppetry and dance to tell this story. "The Tree and the Abbey" was presented at the Edinburgh festival, has been performed on several occasions since with newly created elements. The play won a prestigious community project award from the UK National Autistic Society. Cast voices are included in the presentation and the director and one of the cast will be on hand to discuss their experiences.

Perspectives: "The Tree and the Abbey" was a collaborative journey of discovery for autistic performers and support practitioners alike, many of whom were performing in public for the first time and also found their voice through the production. As such the play was an important community project, pulling on a wide variety of strengths and talents to bring the piece to the stage.
