Catatonia type breakdown is one of the most enigmatic and challenging aspect of Autism, and causes enormous stress to individuals and families and adversely affects their quality of life in extreme ways. It is rarely diagnosed in its mild and moderate form or as a breakdown due to the complexity of presentation and lack of awareness in professionals and carers. This paper will discuss the prevalence, diagnostic characteristics, early indicators and prevention of breakdown, treatment and management based on Dr Amitta Shah’s extensive clinical experience and research studies of Catatonia conditions in ASD. The Shah and Wing approach and guidelines for psychological treatment and management will be described with reference to clinical case examples.
