David Dixon

Freelance writer and researcher on Leadership for Sustainability

A Headteacher for 20 years up until the end of 2015. Achieved a doctorate in Education Leadership at the University of Lincoln in 2009. The thesis developed a new model called 'Green Leader'. Used an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) ethos to drive school improvement. This included embedding ESD in the Curriculum, Campus and Community of the three schools he led. Helped develop the National Framework for Sustainable Schools which aimed to make every school a sustainable school by 2020. This was dropped by the Coalition Government in 2012. In 2014, undertook BELMAS funded research to show the effects of ESD approaches on middle leader Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Now, a Part-time Director of a group of Children's centres in Woolwich south east London, he also continues to research in the area of ESD and present conference papers and deliver leadership workshops for education professionals. Currently running residential leadership 'experiences' on ESD, making links to overall school improvement. These were developed with WWF-UK a few years ago and he now has the time to take them further, following another grant from BELMAS which will allow them to be updated and evaluated. The outcome of this will be presented as a research paper in the latter part of 2018. He was awarded the 'Excellence in Educational Leadership Award 2012' from the University Council for Educational Administration in recognition of his action research. He is on the national Global Learning Programme Advisory Board and the British Council Round Table on Global Learning.
