Susan Ryan is Professor of English at the University of Louisville, where she teaches nineteenth-century American literature and culture. She is the author of The Grammar of Good Intentions: Race and the Antebellum Culture of Benevolence (Cornell UP, 2003) and The Moral Economies of American Authorship: Reputation, Scandal, and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Marketplace (Oxford UP, 2016). Her current project addresses the myriad and contradictory ways in which ideas about India figured into nineteenth-century American print culture.
