University of Victoria

Randall Sobie is a Research Scientist of the Institute of Particle Physics of Canada and Professor of Physics at the University of Victoria. He is a member of the ATLAS Project at the CERN Laboratory in Geneva, which discovered the Higgs Boson in 2012 and is a member of the Belle-II particle physics project at the KEK Laboratory in Japan. He is particularly interested in using leading edge cloud computing and network technologies for particle physics research. He is the Director of HEPNET/Canada which is responsible for national and international networks for Canadian particle physics community. His group is part of an international team that set world records for high speed data transfers over the wide-area network. His group has developed a novel distributed computing cloud system that is used for particle physics.

Abstract

Cloud computing is increasingly being used for running high energy physics (HEP) applications. We review the motivation for using clouds in HEP and describe how they are gradually being integrated into our systems. In... [ view full abstract ]
