More and more people have iPhones and iPads but may not be using them to their full advantage in the workplace.
IT departments have typically supplied technology, training and support in the workplace. This is changing with easier access to leading edge technology. People want to use the latest and greatest devices, but support is not always available nor easy to provide in the usual way.
How can universities:
• support and train people who want to use iDevices at work?
• use iDevices to increase productivity and support daily tasks?
• ensure people know how to keep these devices and their data secure?
• help people choose the right tool for the job?
• do this all in a cost efficient and effective way?
A few Carleton employees, themselves enthusiastic users of iPads and iPhones, saw an opportunity to share their knowledge.
They have used several techniques to provide a low-cost, practical, community-focused support model to Carleton employees. These include:
• Leading informal lunchtime learning sessions that cover one topic in depth.
• Providing hands on opportunities where people learn to configure and manage their own devices.
• Creating a website filled with how-to's, tips and information to answer frequently asked questions.
• Running workshops on specific topics as requested by departments.
People want to use technology like iPhones and iPads at work. By creating an informal, hands-on support and training model focused on users, university IT departments can foster productivity though technology.
