Assessment is THE most impactful thing we can do for student learning (Black & Wiliam 98).
Assessment and feedback are critical drivers of student learning but they are demanding in terms of staff time and resources. The ILTA 2013 survey indicated that teachers struggled with increased workloads and less time. This innovative workshop will demonstrate how to easily make formative assessment an integral part of the learning process by creating technology rich experiences to engage learners.
Good assessment uses multiple measures of student performance (Paloff, 2009) and this interactive session will expose the participants to many different tools they can use to assess students in and out of their classrooms. West (2013) advocates building learning activities around technology that is already in use by the students and recent surveys indicate 99.8% of students now have a smart device. The use of mobile assessment can benefit the instructor in many ways from creating an active classroom and supporting student engagement to pinpointing struggling students and content that requires review.
The objective of this session is that the audience will have hands on experience with a variety of tools and participants will be able to use and evaluate three assessment tools for potential use in their classroom.
Session agenda
Participants complete three pre-set quizzes utilising Kahoot, Zaption and Quizizz.
Using Zeetings the audience will vote on their preferred tool, take notes and use the space as a presentation backchannel to discuss the affordances of mobile assessment.
Information on the three assessment tools (along with alternatives) are posted to a Padlet Wall with supporting documentation. Participants may add their own personal favourites to the wall during and after the session and this resource will then be available to all.
