Our goal at the RCSI is to give our students a contemporary web experience when visiting our Moodle.
One of the tools that we use to do this, is the Engagement Dashboard which is a custom Moodle plugin developed by RCSI with our Moodle partner Enovation. It allows our students to see what has been done and what is left to do. It offers both a Simple view and a Detailed view.
The Simple View provides a standard progress bar that counts the completion of activity.
The Detailed View gives the student a clear indication of how much progress they have made in relation to all the activities in a course. A key feature of the Engagement Dashboard is that it shows the student where they sit in relation to the lowest, average and highest completion scores for Moodle activities in the class. It provides a competitive stimulus to move from a low score to a high score, while all the time respecting the student’s anonymity.
A student is able to drill down into their score, to get a view of their progress on the activities in each topic. The activities themselves are grouped so that a student can see for example that they have completed 90% of the Lesson related activity in a topic and then jump directly to that topic to do something actionable.
Teacher’s get a quick and easy to understand view of the level of engagement with the activities in their course. The Engagement Dashboard provides an easy filterable list of students and engagement scores and where these sit in relation to the lowest, average and highest score in the class and then to identify students where an intervention might be needed.
Moodle counts the completion of activities equally. Teachers know that not all activities have the same value. With this in mind the Engagement Dashboard allows activities to be weighted, a more valuable activity gives a higher engagement score.
