In nearly every  discipline there are topics that are taught in first year but the knowledge gained is vital for subsequent years. This short paper outlines:

• How we used the quiz feature within our VLE to test our students knowledge of a core piece of software. 
• How we created questions in bulk and turned an assessment of learning into an assessment of/for and as learning.
• How an individual assessment was turned into a peer learning exercise
• How the lecturer was able to identify common issues with students knowledge and adapt learning materials accordingly
