This presentation discusses a journey into the realm of TEL within the context of organisational and disciplinary challenges. The progression for educators from conventional f2f delivery to an entirely online platform is a particularly daunting experience given the massive chasm between the two. This is compounded by the continuously evolving nature of technology-enhanced teaching and learning, and the serious commitment implicit in it. The level of organisational support required to sustain quality TEL appears to be vastly underestimated and this clearly emerges as a significant contributory factor in the lack of engagement by many educators.
An online module in the area of creative and performing arts will be introduced in this presentation. This 5-credit module, entitled Western Art Music: Baroque to Mid 20th Century, was designed out of necessity to address a new Teaching Council registration requirement for music students. The choice of an online platform rather than a blended model was determined by time constraints and the need for optimum accessibility, however in terms of application, this was not without challenges.
The significance of aesthetics within a creative discipline as a primary design driver will be illustrated as will the strong focus on accessibility arising from a keen awareness of the diverse student profile. The selection of specific tools is indicative of the emphasis on accessibility but also of personal limitations with regard to level of technology that could realistically be embraced within a limited time period.
The learning experience of this TEL journey amplifies the need to continuously evolve as an educator and move beyond the comfort zone of conventional f2f delivery. It is vital however, that improved organisational supports are put in place for educators to realise the full potential of TEL.
