H5P (HTML5 Package) is an open source and free content creation tool that has gained traction over the last few years in the world of technology enhanced learning. The tool is based on HTML5 and offers a wide range of content types such as annotated video, game based options and an interactive timeline. H5P is compatible with Moodle, Drupal and Wordpress. The project began in 2013 began at a Norwegian company, Joubel, but the project is now described as a community driven project. Joubel make some great claims for the product including the possibility that H5P could break down long existing barriers to content creation and sharing practices such as copyright, compatibility issues and the complexity of authoring tools. The tool is certainly is developing at pace with new functionality available each year since its introduction, and a second annual H5P conference scheduled for December in Melbourne.
So does H5P, as Joubel claim, make it easy for everyone to create and share interactive content ‘with a great user experience for both the content creators and the content consumers’? (H5P, 2018). This presentation will give an overview of an initial adventure into the world of H5P over the last 18 months, sharing the experiences of creating interactive content in several different educational contexts using H5P. Examples of work will be shared including an interactive timeline, a presentation with a built in quiz and interactive hotspots. It is hoped that these reflections might be a starting point in terms of assessing H5P as a quality alternative to more complex content authoring tools.
