Understanding learner motivations and goals is important in language learning course design. In addition, learner autonomy, ownership and self-expression are critical in facilitating engagement and encouraging interaction both between learners and between learners and content. In an online learning context, however, opportunities for learners to express goals, desires and orientations are often limited and the lack of face-to-face interaction can make the construction of a community of learners more difficult. This paper reports the results of a thematic analysis of learner contributions using the Padlet tool, a multimedia pin board, used to facilitate learner reflection and goal articulation. The Padlet was incorporated as an optional activity at the beginning of the Irish language MOOC, Irish 101, delivered through the FutureLearn platform. The paper concludes by critiquing the Padlet tool as an instrument for encouraging learner engagement and reflection, building a community, informing iterative refinement and enhancing overall course design.
