Older workers are valuable because of their knowledge, skills and experience yet ageing may reduce their working capacity and change their needs. This UK Government’s Foresight Future of Ageing review considers how changes to the work system might enable more older workers to remain in the workforce. The research literature, related materials and expert input have been critically considered. Physical and psychological work demands on older workers frequently exacerbate existing conditions or lead to ill health. Risk assessment of work for those over 65 years lacks validity as most current guidance is based on a younger population. Management of an ageing work force requires additional knowledge to maximise the contribution of older workers. Older workers will need appropriate motivation and good ergonomic system deign to retain them in employment. Evaluation of the impact (benefits) of workplace interventions and designs for older workers is needed along with sector specific policy and guidance.
