Patient care can often be made more complicated by the risk, or actual emergence, of a secondary condition during treatment. One such condition is acute kidney injury (AKI), which can occur amongst patients whether in hospital or in the community. We examined how practitioners manage AKI in their everyday practice. Our findings highlight the importance of human factors, such as decision making and co-ordination across healthcare organizations. We suggest that these are taken into account in improvement interventions.
