We have observed and interviewed general practice staff involved in medicines management (the supply, use and monitoring of medicines) to understand how they carry out their work. Our findings indicate ways in which their systems of working may allow them to maintain quality and safety – or, conversely, how these systems may introduce risks to the work. We are using the findings as the basis of future work to develop support for general practices in managing patient safety risks.
