The main goal of this research is to gain a greater understanding of how reward management can effectively influence employee attraction and retention within Irish SMEs. It is apparent from reviewing reward management literature that there are potentially two sides to reward customisation; the firm and the individual. We propose that the design of reward management practices should accord with key individual differences and organisational context to enhance important employee outcomes. The review of reward management literature has highlighted that limited attention has been devoted to demonstrating the appropriate package of various kinds of rewards according to both the key characteristics of individuals and the different context of organizations. Therefore, this research will address this gap by investigating the role of size as an organization context and age as one of the key individual characteristics in shaping an appropriate reward system to attract and retain employees within Irish SMEs.
