The protection of rhino, as a rare and endangered species, has been widely publicised. Various solutions, with ethical and moral implications, have been proposed to protect this species. The objective of this theoretical paper is to discuss and illustrate the ethical implications relating to a dilemma involving the two main proposals suggested to protect this rare species in South Africa. Thus far, the debate has primarily involved the consideration of conservation, economic and legal issues.
Through the filter of moral imagination, the paper seeks (a) to apply sensitivity to the understanding of each dilemma; (b) to debate the issues from the perspective of those who advance argument supporting each dilemma and (c) to consider alternatives that may supply fresh impetus into the thinking on the preservation of this species in the country.
This paper seeks to contribute to the debate by approaching the topic from the stance of an ethical dilemma utilising moral imagination to highlight the options considered in protecting this species.
Key words: conservation; endangered species; rhino poaching; moral imagination; trade ban.
