Through a systematic review of both academic and practitioner literature on talent management (TM), this study captures the most commonly cited TM practices. This empirical research then identified the extent to which these TM practices are employed by Irish companies, as well as the respondents’ perception of their effectiveness on their organisation.
Although TM practices are widely used; they are applied to varying degrees. Results indicate that employing a TM strategy has significant benefits for the business. For those companies whose TM strategy aligns with their organisational objectives, they are even more likely to yield positive financial results.
Some TM approaches appear to have a broader, positive impact on employee satisfaction, but with less tangible financial results. Not employing a TM strategy appears to have negative consequences for the organisation. These findings demonstrate that, by introducing even the most cost effective TM fundamentals, organisations could realise substantial improvements on employee engagement and retention levels.
