The essence of higher education Institution in Nigeria is to provide services that greatly contribute to a sound socioeconomic and political environment to the growth of the society. In reference to current realities, the process of performing these statutory duties is confronted with several challenges. These challenges range from inadequate performance, increasing cost, declining quality, limited access, curriculum rigidity,poor technology and community services. An effective system performance of the higher education system in Nigeria is no doubt an important factor in the development of the country. Therefore, attention should be given  to the ability to build capacity, sustain the process and ensure effective utilization of what have been built over the years for the survival of the higher education system in Nigeria. Hence, this study seeks to investigate issues that affect the performance of higher education and proffer sustainable solutions towards the sustenance of the system.
