The internationalization and/or innovation are not the only aspects that an organization should take into account in order to be more competitive in the current crisis. The only inexhaustible source of competitiveness are the people. In that sense and so as to increase competitiveness, the creation of more participatory organizations is the tendency that should domain in the organizations. We reckon that participatory organizations increase the involvement of the (participatory) employees, and that they also increase firm productivity and employee psychological well-being.
The co-operative model is theoretically, by its own nature, the more appropriate context for being participative. A member participates in the property, in the results and, in theory, they should participate in decision making in three different levels: task discretion, organizational participation and strategic participation.
In that sense, we consider that factors such as autonomy, labour conditions, training, communication, information and transparency, recognition, payment policy, performance appraisal system, teamwork, job promotion system… are key aspects to become the participation in decision making (hereinafter PDM) effective.
The aim of the research is to help co-operatives to identify which factors influence somehow in the effectiveness of the PDM in the three different levels abovementioned and to identify in which way do they influence.
The analysis will be done in a worker´s co-operative located in Guipuzcoa (Spain) that belongs to Mondragon Corporation. The president of such co-operative is concerned about the level of the PDM in the co-operative, although one of the principles of Mondragon is, indeed, the participation.
In this study based on qualitative and quantitative research (in order to get more accurate results), our key data is more than 100 observations of the employee´s perceptions regarding to the factors that influence in the PDM. With this dataset, we will try to measure which of the factors abovementioned are the most important ones to explain the perceptions of the employees (members or not) about the participation in decision making.
