Studies of mergers and acquisitions are a recurring topic in the business literature, mainly to determine if these processes contribute to adding value to companies involved. This paperwork is approached in order to establish, through a literature review on the subject, what are those factors, beyond the scope of the economic valuation, as well as socio-cultural, organizational and management aspects, that in many instances are often overlooked in this type of studies, that can be a key factor in the success or failure of these processes. The study is complemented by a survey conducted to the managers and administrators of Spanish agri-food cooperatives involved in mergers that failed to implement the merger.
