In 2013 we introduced an in-year management system for shellfish classifications to help us focus on shellfish beds that showed deteriorating compliance with EU regulations.
84% of shellfish beds in England and Wales are classified as Class B, product harvested from these areas are required to go for purification or to be relayed prior to being placed on the market. Should a Class B area not meet 90% compliance with EU standards it could face being downgraded which would necessitate product harvested from the area to either be cooked or relayed for a long period before being sold. Additional treatment costs more and the product is of lower value which can result in the closure of businesses.
The in-year system helps to identify areas that are marginally compliant so that we can work with relevant bodies to try to identify the cause and encourage action to rectify the situation. In essence the buffer gives a bed extra time to improve compliance and avoids the fluctuation of classification category. A full review is carried out annually in line with requirements to ensure that all areas are categorised correctly according to levels of contamination.
The Class B In-year management system has been assessed and authorised by the EU Commission.
