As long as we have computed and communicated, performance has driven us to use distinct representations for each. The scale efficiency of integrated electronics and the transmission efficiency of optics led to the dreaded OEO problem. In this presentation we ask whether there's one ring - one encoding that can support high-speed, long distance communication *and* computation and whether there's a path to our Mount Doom where it can be forged.
