In this paper, we provide a classification of different types of distrust and address the respective consequences of distrust. Therein, we also discuss potential positive aspect of distrust in different contexts. This so called bright side of distrust may be considered distrust research’s equivalent to the dark side of trust in trust research. We take a case study approach and analyze different examples / cases of distrust. In the discussion of these cases, we highlight the positive impact of distrust. The detailed conceptualization of distrust consequences leads us to evidence for distrust as a (potential) source of innovation in organizational settings.
