The paper aims to analyze how is the knowledge necessary for organization and production of social services realized, managed and stored within the three silos of intellectual capital: human capital, structural capital, relational capital.
The research is based on a case study of a network formed by 11 Italian local governments supplying a wide range of social services (concerning old people, families, social diseases). The paper analyzes the state of art, strength and weakness points and discusses the potential of improvement by introducing the main instruments of intellectual capital and knowledge management.
As a conclusion, the paper attempts to demonstrate that both the characteristics of the services analyzed and the peculiarity of the organization chosen for their delivery (the network), ensure that the development of an intellectual capital approach could have a strong positive impact. This is even more evident if we consider that in the present situation these aspects are widely neglected.
