Dr László Trócsányi has been nominated by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to be Hungary’s Minister of Justice. After hearings by the Parliamentary Committees on Legal Affairs and European Affairs, he was appointed Minister by President János Áder. Minister Trócsányi took his oath before the National Assembly on 6 June 2014.
Minister Trócsányi is a lawyer by profession. He graduated from the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of Eötvös Loránd University in 1980 and was admitted to the bar in 1985.
Dr Trócsányi began his career as a legal librarian in the Hungarian Parliamentary Library in 1980. A year later he became a junior researcher at the Institute for Legal Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He became a fellow researcher in the same Institute in 1985 and worked there until 1988.
After successfully passing the bar exam in 1985; he became a member of the Budapest Chamber of Lawyers. Due to his various commitments in the public life he has not practised between 2000 and 2004, and since 2007.
As a continuation of his scientific career, he was assistant professor at the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of the University of Szeged between 1989 and 1991. He continued his work at the same University as reader (1991-1994) and then senior lecturer (1994-2000). Since 2000, he is professor at Szeged University. Professor Trócsányi has also served as Director of the International and Regional Studies Institute of Szeged University since 2004.
Professor Trócsányi has always been a supporter of Francophonie in Hungary: since 2005 he has been chief coordinator of French-language courses in European Law at MA level and of International Relations at BA and MA level.
Professor László Trócsányi was a guest lecturer at the Law Faculty of the Jean Moulin University Lyon 3 and also the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve from 2006-2009.
Dr Trócsányi serves as Hungarian Ambassador to both Belgium and Luxembourg between 2000 and 2004. László Trócsányi served as Hungary’s Ambassador to France between 2010 and 2014.
The National Assembly (the Hungarian Parliament) elected Dr Trócsányi a Member of the Constitutional Court in 2007. László Trócsányi later resigned his membership of the Constitutional Court in view of his diplomatic duties.
Professor Trócsányi was a Substitute Member of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe between 2005 and 2013.
László Trócsányi is a holder of academic qualifications of Candidatus Scientiarum and Habilitation since 1990 and 2000, respectively.
László Trócsányi received the Palmas Académiques award from the France government in 1996 and the Grand Officer Class of the Order of Leopold II from Belgium in 2002. He also received the Pro Universitate Award from the University of Szeged in 2005 and the Károly Eötvös Award from the Budapest Chamber of Lawyers in 2005.
László Trócsányi is married with three children.
