The goal of this research is to empirically map out smart city literature as an effort to provide a roadmap. Given the nature of inquiry, smart city studies cut across the multiple disciplines and domains. This manuscript investigates what domains smart city research appears across in Korean scholarly works (collecting and analyzing academic DB data in Korea). Following Meijer & Bolivar (2015) discussion, this manuscript adds an international literature to compare and extends the debate about smart city governance. In doing so, we aim to contribute to the Meijer & Bolivar (2015)’s goal towards a sophisticated perspective on smart city governance.
Second, this manuscript looks some practical reports and newspapers to gauge the ongoing use of smart city projects. Using a big data analysis tool (TEXTOM ), we investigate the use of “smart city” wording on the web. This will shed lights on how newspapers and online media outlets (including social media) use smart city wording. We will compare and contrast this to the academic use of smart city terminology.
Third, we present a few ongoing development project cases in Korea to match the discussion and dialogue we investigated. Some projects are specific to the region (led by the local) and some projects are more generic (as modeled by Korea Land & Housing Corporation).
In sum, this manuscript aims to map out discussion of smart city research, debate, and practices in Korea, and continue the academic dialogue of Meijer & Boliva (2015)
