Microalgae cultivation using industrial CO2 emissions and fortuitous heat gains: Preliminary environmental assessment of an Industrial Symbiosis

Camilo Durán

University of Nantes

Since 2016: in a Post-Doctorate Position at University of Nantes (France) as a part of the Chair of Civil Engineering and Eco-construction. Working on a project aiming to evaluate the environmental impact of innovative microalgae processes (culture, biorefinery, by-products). This is made by integrating LCA tools and databases with process modelling. Sensitivity analysis will also be integrated.  2015:  PhD in Process and Environmental Engineering at INSA Toulouse and Irstea in France concerning the experimental study of oxygenation performances in activated sludge in the context of urban wastewater treatment.  Lab and field experience with bioreactors, water treatment, fluid mechanics, CFD, rheology, membrane filtration. 2010: Research Engineer at LISBP Toulouse. Modelling of a UV desinfection reactor. Coupling a light irradiance model with photochemical kinetics and flow equations using CFD tools. 2009: MSc in Process and Environmental Engineering at INSA Toulouse, France. Internship: Evaluating the efficiency and energy performance of the wastewater treatment membrane bioreactor installed in the city of Nailloux, France. Setting up a simulation platform (including biological models) to study and optimize the treatment process 2004: BSc in Process Engineering Universidad de América, Bogotá, Colombia.

Abstract

Due to their photosynthetic metabolism, microalgae’s growth is based on their capacity to uptake CO2 while capturing energy from light (solar or artificial) and transforming it into chemical energy and molecules. Grown under... [ view full abstract ]
