This paper describes a monitoring system based on Raspberry Pi 3 (RPi 3) and Zigbee wireless sensor network (WSN). The whole system uses XBee XB24CAPIT-001 radio frequency chips in order to create low powered and reliable Zigbee connection. To monitor a voltage loss in the system and to inform a customer about triggering of alarm system the RPi USV+ and GSM SIM800 modules have been connected to the RPi. In order to make a system more robust a random Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) key can be generated and periodically changed after each enable of security system or timer. The system can monitor the battery voltage in all Zigbee End Devices (ZED) and inform a customer by Global Special Mobile (GSM) network if battery is becoming discharged. In case, if a customer wants to be in save at night-time the proposed security system has a night mode with partial protection. In case, if someone entered illegally in the living area, the proposed system can inform a customer by using alarm siren or smartphone. The entire application part works in background by using daemon, thus a customer has possibility to observe a system status or other events in the log file only.
