Karina Alvarado, who has proposed the term ‘contextual dominance” to understand the simultaneous position of Mexicans in Los Angeles as both subordinated and hegemonic, will share her analysis on the practices of passing among many Central Americans in Los Angeles as Mexican or Black for survival. She proposes the ways in which these acts of passing allow the passers to inhabit those new identities.
