In "Deconstructing Gender and Latinidad: Intertextuality in Malportado’s “Mi Concha” and “Soy la Pocha,”" Alejandra (A.J.) Mejía mines the intersections between contemporary Latinas/os and punks with a focus on the Providence, Rhode Island duo Malportado Kids. Malportado Kids’ anti-colonial music combines punk, electronic dance beats, cumbia, English, and Spanish to create a unique sonic fusion with explicitly politicized lyrics. Mejía employs a comparative textual analysis of the lyrics and sounds in the songs “Mi Concha” (2013) and “Soy la Pocha” (2014) to explore how each song deconstructs categorical notions of gender and Latinidad.
