Taking a cue from Latina/o Studies, sound and theater theorists, I turn to the role of sound, sonic composition, the aural textures and contours of language and its relationship to Latinidad to enhance our understanding of Latina/o performance and theater making practices. Soundtracks of Latino performances and rehearsals provide emotive texture to dramaturgical intent, and show how sound functions as a social document. Close listening to sonic compositions reveals the significant auditory strategies Latinos implement to confront and inflect American theater with racial, ethnic, and gender difference.
