In the spring of 2016, The Latino Theater Company will produce the world premiere of Evelina Fernandez’ “La Olla”. I will explore how Fernandez and Director Jose Luis Valenzuela not only adapt the Roman text through language, but also how they cite a history of borrowing and adaptation as they employ the aesthetic influences of the Rumbera films of the Mexican Epoca de Oro, along with Cuban rumba music. This network of borrowing functions as a theatrical framework from which to explore the issues of greed, lust, and ambition inherent in Platutus’ original work.
