Looking at the recent scholarship on translation and adaptation studies, I examine the work of Luis Alfaro. Alfaro has adapted Aesop’s fables, the Spanish Golden Age, and most recently, several Greek tragedies. Focusing on Electricidad, Oedipus El Rey, and the city-specific renditions of Mojada, this paper addresses the place of adaptation within both Alfaro’s oeuvre and the Latino Theatre canon. Why has adaptation become so prominent in Latino theaters in the last few years and amongst Latino playwrights? How does Alfaro’s work impact the trans-adaptations of other Latino playwrights?
