In 2004, Gloria Anzaldua died of complications caused by Diabetes-Type 1. When she was first diagnosed, the research on Diabetes was not as sophisticated as it is now. Today, the research on Diabetes has grown due to the disease now reaching epidemic levels. Almost 30 million individuals in the U.S. have Diabetes. Almost two million are diagnosed every year with 8 million individuals undiagnosed. This paper will focus on why the rates of Diabetes are so high among Latinos, why we receive contradicting messages about our food and health, and ways to truly become intimate with your body in order to self-manage and remain healthy.
