In arguing for the importance of “liberating the kitchen,” recognizing that it has been a site of both oppression and empowerment to so many women, we are emphasizing the importance of taking back our own food as part of working for social justice. The tortilla—corn, amaranth, white flour—has fed our people for thousands of years, produced by the daily labor of girls and women. This article discusses the trans, queer, and feminist implications for revolutionary tortillas, drawing from literature (Silko), art (Jiménez-Underwook) and ethnography (Abarca, Counihan).
