Elise and Ramos Pellicia, in their paper “Anything But Black/Anything but Race,” analyze discursive constructions of race and “Blackness” in Borikén (Puerto Rican) context amid discourses of “trigueño” identity that are taken up as either homages to African/Black aesthetics or as a racial project of blanqueamiento. This analysis seeks to intervene in the ongoing scholarly conversations around how Latin@s are shaping and/or conspiring with the dominant “black-white binary” in the United States.
