John Mckiernan-Gonzalez’s paper, "'Because I was born poor': Latino Physicians, Social Justice Inclusion, and Institution Building in 1970s Texas," traces the relationship Latino physicians forged with key players in the Democratic Party through LULAC and the GI Forum in the 1950s, and how these patronage relations carried through the 1970s. Here, Mckiernan-Gonzalez’s emphasis is on how this cohort of doctors sought to increase medical opportunities for working-class communities, over addressing the constraints shaping working class lives in Texas.
