This paper argues the significant growth of the Latino population has potential to increase the group’s political power. Yet, in the face of the political and economic challenge from groups of color, whites have consistently developed policies and practices to maintain white supremacy. Such efforts to limit Latino political participation and political power have intensified over the last decade. This paper provides an overview of the Latino demographic trends and the political backlash that whites and the Republican Party have leveled against Latinos to limit its political power. The analysis draws on critical race and white supremacy perspectives to understand the link between Latino population growth and efforts to limit the group’s political power. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations to challenge the white supremacy political agenda.
