This paper uses data from the 2006-2014 American Community Surveys, and compares a variety of socioeconomic outcomes, including poverty rates and labor market earnings, of recent Puerto Rican migrants and Mexican immigrants in their respective traditional “gateway” areas versus non-traditional areas on the U.S. mainland. The authors will also consider how these groups fared relative to more “settled” Puerto Ricans and Mexican Americans as well as non-Hispanic whites throughout this time period, taking into account the possibility of circular migration.
