Born in Italy, citizen of the USA and Switzerland, honorary (retired) professor of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he formerly was institute and department director, dean of the School of Basic Sciences and Provost (Vice-president). In his 47 years of research career, he worked on semiconductors, superconductors and biological materials. He was since the 1970's a pioneer of synchrotron radiation, the scientific director of SRC-Wisconsin and of Elettra-Trieste, and the council president of a series of European integrating initiatives. Author of some 750 articles, bestselling books and book chapters. Editor-in-chief of J. Phys. D.
