Rather than present a traditional paper, I propose to report on an edited volume of case studies, "Governing Medical Commons," which I am editing with Brett M. Frischmann and Michael J. Madison (forthcoming Cambridge University Press). Several of the chapters are authored by members of the user innovation community and relate user innovation in the medical arena to knowledge commons approaches to innovation. The presentation will provide an overview of the book, along with a description of overall observations and hypotheses emerging from the studies, along with a more specific discussion of three case studies of rare disease research consortia that I and my collaborators have conducted. Please see the "paper" for a table of contents of the volume.
